Editorial standards

Sourcing

We prefer named sources and documents. Anonymity is granted when a source faces a real professional or legal risk, and the piece says what the source is in a position to know and why they are not named.

Verification

Factual claims are checked against a primary source before publication. Where a claim rests on a single source, the piece says so.

Corrections

Errors are corrected on the page with a dated note explaining what changed. We do not silently revise a published piece.

Independence

No sponsor, advertiser, or subscriber sees a story before publication. Staff do not accept payment, travel, or gifts from organizations they cover.

Artificial intelligence

We do not publish machine written articles. Tools may be used for transcription, translation, and research assistance. Everything published under a byline was written and verified by the person named.

Images

Photographs are documentary. We do not alter the content of an image beyond standard cropping and color correction, and every image carries a credit.
