About The 13th Bell

The 13th Bell is an independent publication covering politics, power, and world affairs. We report on how decisions get made, who makes them, and what happens to the rest of us afterward.

The name comes from an old convention. A town bell rang the hours, and everyone knew the count. The bell that rang after the count was finished meant something else entirely, and people looked up. We try to be that bell rather than the hourly one.

What we cover

Three things, mostly. The first is government at every level, including the state and local institutions that get almost no scrutiny and decide most of what people encounter. The second is power that never appears on a ballot, which includes regulators, advisers, boards, and the drafting layer inside agencies. The third is the world, reported from the assumption that other countries have their own politics rather than serving as a backdrop for ours.

What we are not

We are not a wire service and we do not try to be first on a story that will be everywhere within the hour. We publish fewer pieces and spend longer on each one. When we do not know something, we say so in the piece.

How we are funded

Reader subscriptions are the majority of our revenue. We sell a limited number of sponsorships, one per week, disclosed on the page. No sponsor sees a story before publication and no sponsor has any influence on what we cover.
